News

Fresh Start Caring for Kids Foundation transforms the lives of disadvantaged infants, children and teens with physical deformities caused by birth defects, accidents, abuse or disease through the gift of reconstructive surgery and related medical care.

The foundation provides no-cost medical services to patients through Surgery Weekends and clinics. Medical services are donated by doctors, clinicians and other medical professionals.

All of the overhead and administrative expenses for the Fresh Start Caring For Kids Foundation are covered by Fresh Start Surgical Gifts and The Plastic Surgery Foundation, so that 100% of every donation directly benefits the medical needs of our patients.

We are delighted to introduce Norma Lopez, RN as a member of our volunteer team. Norma has been a Registered Nurse for 22 years. Despite having two years of experience working with chronic adult patients, her calling has always been taking care of children. She likes to read and play with her dog, Eiko, in her spare time. She is also an avid orchidophile and she collects and tends to nearly 100 orchids at home. She is currently training to run in the Chicago Marathon.

I love the mission of the foundation that is providing free surgical interventions to patients in the plastic surgery department.  We all know that not all operations can be covered by insurance, so this is a good opportunity for families to avail.

In 2014, Lopez learned about The University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital's partnership with Fresh Start Caring For Kids Foundation. Lopez says, "I love the mission of the foundation that is providing free surgical interventions to patients in the plastic surgery department.  We all know that not all operations can be covered by insurance, so this is a good opportunity for families to avail. It is always nice and gratifying  that we have the cleft lip/palate kids have a new smile or that other patients get their ears/scar fixed giving them a new look when they see themselves in the mirror." Lopez has served in the capacities of Pre-Op Nurse and PACU Nurse during Chicago Surgery Weekends. She asserts, "You can feel the energy and enthusiasm of the volunteers and that is reflected with patient and families as well.  We are all volunteers and we wanted to be there to work with the team and the patient."

Giving them a new outlook can make a big difference in the lives of these children so they can, in turn, be better members of society. Doing this locally through Fresh Start Caring For Kids Foundation is best for our city.

Lopez is hopeful that Fresh Start will continue to transform the lives of children into adulthood. She states, "It is a fact that some of our patients have syndromes and facial anomalies and are more prone to bullying and low self-esteem issues [than their counterparts who do not have such anomalies]. It only makes sense that giving them a new outlook can make a big difference in the lives of these children so they can, in turn, be better members of society. Doing this locally through Fresh Start Caring For Kids Foundation is best for our city.”

On behalf of Fresh Start and our patients, we are incredibly grateful to have Norma Lopez as a member of our team and an advocate for our organization.
