PATIENT SPOTLIGHT: JULIAN

Utica Gray

Julian is a shy, two-year old boy who is described by his mother as a sweet and caring little boy who loves to give hugs. He likes to make his parents laugh, and he is a bundle of joy who has an infectious laugh of his own. Julian loves to run and play with his older brother, and he also enjoys swimming and playing at the park.

Julian was diagnosed with polydactly of the feet at birth when it was discovered that he had an extra toe on each foot. Julian’s extra digits made it difficult to secure properly-fitting shoes. He also had to alter his gait in order to make balancing and walking with extra digits possible. Ultimately, such adjustments could have an impact on his future physical development.

Julian underwent a number of unsuccessful interventions in his native Puerto Rico. Thereafter, Hurricane Maria ravaged the island and Julian and his family were displaced. Julian and his family moved to Illinois after escaping the devastation, and they have settled into their new lives on the mainland.

Julian’s parents were referred to Fresh Start Caring For Kids Foundation by Brittany Wilson, LPC, a  social worker who has assisted the family since they were displaced. On September 22, 2018, Julian underwent repair surgery performed by Patrick L. Reavey, MD, MS, assistant professor of surgery and orthopaedics at The University of Chicago Medicine. Many of Julian’s learned ambulatory movements and balance would have needed to be re-learned during multiple physical therapy sessions had the surgery been performed at a later age.

When asked why she wanted to entrust Fresh Start with the care of her child, Julian’s mother says, “[Fresh Start is] giving a little normalcy to my child’s life. Living is this new era, kids do get bullied for a lot of things. I, as a mother, will do anything to prevent any harm to my kid. Julian deserves the best life possible—- free from teasing and bullying. Fresh Start is giving him that opportunity.”

Julian’s mother says, “Julian will learn that there are programs that will do everything for someone and not expect anything in return. [I hope he] opens his  heart to believe that there good people out there.” She graciously provided the following note of appreciation for the surgical services her son received from Fresh Start Caring For Kids Foundation.

We lost so much back in Puerto Rico and gained so much more after my angels [from Fresh Start] were sent. We were blessed to find a program like this. You guys have a heart of gold, and we could not be more blessed.
