We are delighted to introduce Dr. Alina Lazar as a member of our volunteer team. Dr. Lazar has been an attending anesthesiologist for The University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital for 10 years, after completing her anesthesia residency in Boston at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Pediatric Anesthesia fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Her special expertise is in pediatric pain, pediatric cardiac anesthesia. She also has a special interest in anesthesia for craniofacial surgery. When she is not working, Dr. Lazar enjoys spending quality time with her two daughters, baking, making music, and crafting felt dolls.
Dr. Lazar signed up to volunteer at Fresh Start Caring For Kids Foundation’s Surgery Weekends as soon as she learned of the opportunity. She says, “I have always wanted to volunteer to help children.” Fresh Start’s Surgery Weekends fulfill her long-standing desire to lend her medical expertise to benefit the lives of children. Dr. Lazar recounts of her first experience, “I remember the first time I participated. There was so much excitement and emotion in the air. Everybody was smiling and giving their best to make sure the patients had the most wonderful experience. We were all so happy to be able to put in our time, effort and expertise to help the children who needed us. Every time I participate is almost the same. The feeling of going the extra mile for somebody and the quiet gratitude in the eyes of our patients and their families make everything so worth it.”
Dr. Lazar’s role during Surgery Weekends in Chicago includes coordinating the anesthesia services, and the operating room operations for most of the Surgery Weekends. She also closely communicates with the Fresh Start staff to identify special patient needs and medical concerns and to optimize the patients' status prior to surgery. If needed, Dr. Lazar contacts the families prior to surgery to discuss anesthesia options and to answer their questions.
Dr. Lazar says, “Fresh Start (Caring For Kids) Foundation does an outstanding job helping children with surgical needs that are not covered by insurance. I wish more children took advantage of the tremendous resources, enthusiasm and generosity generated during these Fresh Start surgical weekends.”
